The Old Town Penobscot family of canoes is named for the Native American Penobscot tribe and owes their design to that heritage.

Unlike its Royalex® relatives, the Penobscot 174 is made of triple-layer polyethylene, with vinyl gunwales, wood webbed seats, and an unstained ash thwart and yoke.

Like many aquatic creatures, the 174 is far more graceful in the water than on land. While complaints are few, it is a heavy canoe and, like the Penobscot 164, there are reports of the hull developing a bulge. Used more as a tandem, it takes time to learn how to master controlling this boat alone. Although it’s classified as a tripping/expedition canoe, it seems unlikely that anyone would look forward to portaging it, let alone all the gear it can hold. Great for leisure, the 174 is also up to the challenge of Class III+ rapids either solo or with a crew.
