The Cannon Wave kayak paddle is the flagship touring paddle for the Cannon paddle company. Designed by kayak enthusiasts, the Wave touring paddle features a large paddle face for handling large waves while paddling at sea or extended tours. The Cannon Wave kayak paddle is available in four different versions to accommodate any skill level or price range. Wave paddle options include the E-Series and A-Series which feature aluminum paddle shafts, the FX Series which features a fiberglass paddle shaft, and the Carbon Series which features a carbon twill paddle shaft.
Pros
The Cannon Wave kayak paddle is a great touring kayak paddle. It offers a flutter free stroke and reduced fatigue compared to other kayak paddles in its price range. I was especially impressed by the less expensive aluminum shaft models. They stacked up very well when I compared them to the carbon fiber model during my review. The aluminum shaft Wave paddle models only weigh five ounces more than the carbon fiber version, yet you hardly notice a difference unless you’re on an extended kayak tour. The Cannon Wave kayak paddle is truly an outstanding touring paddle.
Cons
Although the carbon fiber and fiberglass versions eliminate a few ounces of weight, the price jump doesn’t seem to reflect the quality of the paddle. I’m certain that Cannon’s pricing is in line with their costs, but to the average paddler it just doesn’t make enough difference to pay twice as much for the same kayak paddle performance. If you are certain that the weight reduction is worth the extra cash, I would recommend that you compare the carbon fiber and fiberglass models closely. The fiberglass version only weighs one ounce more than the carbon fiber Wave kayak paddle, and I found that there was no difference at all in their paddling performance during my review.
Overall Review
I would rate my review of the Cannon Wave kayak paddle as 5 out of 5. When you balance cost versus performance, the Cannon Wave kayak paddle is truly one of the best values in the touring kayak paddle market. When comparing the Cannon Wave side-by-side with a similar paddle from Werner during my review, I found the two paddles to be nearly equal except for the inflated price of the Werner paddle. My advice; shop around and don’t be fooled by brand names and construction materials. The perfect kayak paddle for you may come from any brand and be made from any type of materials.
