At $48.50, the Old Town Kayak Foam Block Carrier is a cheap and remarkably reliable transport for a kayak. The kit comes with two straps that attach on the car windows, though an additional rope is necessary to tie down the ends of the kayak. The foam is amazingly durable and likely the kayaker will lose the foam blocks before the straps wear through the material. The blocks are beveled and will hug your vehicle with no slippage. Comparably priced to similar items by Riverside and other sporting goods manufacturers, this item looks like a steal compared with bona fide car racks that could set you back $500. And I’ve never known foam blocks to whistle obnoxiously as I speed toward my favorite white water.
