The Old Town Otter XT kayak is the perfect choice for families looking to enjoy the water. Boasting an accessible cockpit and an easy-to-carry lightweight design, the Otter XT kayak was designed with kids and novice adult kayakers in mind. The maneuverability and stability of this kayak will provide the perfect platform to grow your kayaking skills and have fun on the water from the very first day.
The Old Town Otter XT kayak performs fairly average across the board for a recreational kayak. Though it doesn’t stand out as a champion in any particular paddling circumstances or category, the Otter XT offers satisfactory performance for anything you wish to do in a kayak. This “universal” performance makes the Otter XT kayak an excellent choice for beginners or anyone looking to have a versatile backup kayak for guests or at the cabin.
While the Old Town Otter XT kayak may not be the highest performance kayak you’ll ever paddle, it certainly is one of the most versatile. The classic design of this kayak allows you to paddle it in nearly any weather conditions or body of water. The Otter XT can handle minor swells and surf while staying maneuverable enough for everyday recreational kayaking.
Cargo Space Review
With minimal space behind the seat for cargo storage, the Old Town Otter XT lacks a bit in this area. If you’re looking for a kayak that will allow you the freedom to go on multi-day kayak camping excursions, then the Otter XT is probably not for you.
Though Old Town boasts the Otter XT to incredibly portable, I didn’t feel it was all they claimed it to be. At 9’ 6” in length, the Otter XT kayak can be a bit cumbersome for a single paddler to maneuver out of the water. Though it only weighs in at 39lbs, the Otter XT requires a fair amount of balance to carry over your head alone. You will have better success with a kayak dolly or just dragging the kayak around.
Length: 9ft 6in (9’ 6”)
Width: 28.5in (28.5”)
Capacity: 225-275 lbs
Features: Adjustable Seat Back and Foot Braces, Cup Holder, and Paddle Keeper.
My overall review of the Old Town Otter XT kayak is a rating of 3 out of 5 stars. While performing fairly across all the paddling situations I put it through, the Otter XT seemed to lack in the areas that were claimed to be key selling points. Make no mistake, this is a well-built kayak that will serve beginners well, but I feel that the hype is more than what you receive. This surprised me greatly, as Old Town makes some of the finest kayaks I’ve ever had the privilege to paddle.
