The Old Town Penobscot family of canoes is named for the Native American Penobscot tribe and owes their design to that heritage.
The 17 RX is meant for tandem or solo paddling. It has black anodized aluminum gunwales, polyethylene decks with grab handles, nylon web seats, and an unstained ash thwart and yoke. Its intended uses include tripping and expeditions, as well as downriver white-water racing.
While some disagreement exists about the ease of turning the 17 RX—with the consensus being that leaning helps considerably—there’s no doubt that it’s a good all-around canoe for an intermediate or experienced canoeist. Frequently used for long treks through difficult waters, the 17 RX has a secondary stability that can be literally lifesaving. The beauty of the 17 RX is that it meets the needs of a variety of situations, and does it well.
